A former Indian politician convicted of kidnapping has been shot dead on live TV along with his brother. Atiq Ahmed, who was under police escort, was speaking to reporters when a gun was pointed at his head in Prayagraj, also known as Allahabad.
After the shooting, three people who had presented themselves as journalists surrendered and were taken into custody.
Ahmed's teenage son was also shot dead by the police a few days ago. Ahmed had previously claimed that there was a threat to his life from the police.
The video showed Ahmed and his brother, Ashraf, both in handcuffs, talking to reporters on their way to a medical check-up at the hospital seconds before they were both shot. In the footage, widely shared on social media and television channels, Ahmed is asked if he attended his son's funeral.
His last words in front of the camera are: "They didn't take us, that's why we didn't go."
The three suspected attackers had arrived at the site on motorcycles, police said. A policeman and a journalist were also injured at the scene. Following the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a judicial inquiry into the killings and banned large gatherings in Uttar Pradesh districts.
Ahmed, who is a former MP, and his brother were in police custody and brought to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, where Ahmed was facing charges of murder and assault.
