A person was arrested today in northern Kosovo after he attacked police and KEDS officials while they were installing electricity meters.

As a result of the attack with a sharp object, one of the police officers received treatment in hospital. The suspect, who was arrested, had his house raided, where a considerable amount of cryptocurrency production equipment was found, which was seized and sent to the customs terminal.

"On 18.11.2024, police units from the Regional Police Directorate - Mitrovica North, within the framework of regular duties while assisting officials of the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS) in the installation of electricity meters in the Kroi i Vitakut neighborhood, were threatened by a resident (RR) born in 1986. After continuous threats and an attack on police officers, the suspect was arrested. A police officer received medical treatment after being hit with a hard object. Based on well-founded and reasonable suspicions, police units conducted a raid on the person's house where they found a significant amount of cryptocurrency production equipment (RIGA) which were seized and sent to the customs terminal," the police statement said.

All actions taken are reported to the prosecutor in charge, where after the interview, by decision of the prosecutor, the suspect is sent to detention for 48 hours.

Many Serbs in northern Kosovo, because they have never paid for their electricity, have used this opportunity to illegally produce cryptocurrencies, a process called "mining" and requires significant amounts of electricity to carry out.
