One person lost his life and dozens of homes were flooded as heavy rains and strong winds hit Greece, as storm Erminio passed through Athens and several islands in the Aegean.

Authorities said they had recovered the body of a man in the coastal resort town of Nea Makri, 35 km northeast of Athens. It is believed the man was swept away by the current and trapped under a vehicle while trying to cross a flooded road.

Fire services announced that they had received hundreds of calls to rescue stranded citizens and clear roads of fallen trees.

Authorities stopped several ferries from leaving the port of Piraeus near Athens for the Greek islands.

On the Mediterranean island of Crete, the sky turned an eerie orange on Wednesday as strong winds brought dust from North Africa, disrupting flights.
