Norwegian Princess Mette-Marit, who suffers from a chronic lung disease, will likely have to undergo a lung transplant after a "significant deterioration" in her health, the Norwegian Royal Palace announced on Friday.

According to the BBC, the 52-year-old wife of Crown Prince Haakon suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable disease that causes difficulty breathing and has forced her to take medical leave or reduce her official schedule several times.

Mette-Marit was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, a chronic and incurable disease that causes hardening of the lungs, difficulty breathing and low oxygen levels in the blood. Tests conducted this fall showed a clear deterioration, and her doctors have begun the process of evaluating her for a transplant.

Dr. Are Martin Holm, head of respiratory medicine at Oslo University Hospital, said that “we are reaching the point where a lung transplant will be necessary.” The princess herself admitted to public broadcaster NRK that the disease is progressing “faster than she had hoped.”

Currently, a decision has not yet been made to put her on the transplant waiting list, which usually has 20 to 40 patients. Doctors stressed that the princess will not receive special treatment if she is put on the list, but the necessary preparations are being made to make the operation possible when the time comes.

The Royal Palace stated that the princess needs more rest and a special exercise program, but she has expressed a strong desire to continue her official duties, which will be adjusted according to her health condition.

Prince Haakon said in an interview with NRK that his wife seems fine when she is at rest, but he has noticed that she is increasingly having difficulty breathing and has less energy. Activities that the couple enjoyed, such as hiking and skiing, are no longer possible.

Lung transplantation is seen as a last resort and involves significant risks, including rejection of the organ by the body.

The news of the princess's condition comes months after serious allegations were made against her son, Marius Borg Høiby, who is facing 32 criminal charges, including four counts of rape. He has denied the most serious charges, but is expected to plead guilty to some lesser charges in his upcoming trial.
