The Israeli parliament (Knesset) elected the first gay person, representative of the Likud party, Amir Ohana, as the head of this legislative body.
Ohana, the only minister in the Israeli government and the only member of Likud who has openly stated that he is gay, thanked the family in his inaugural address and mentioned the name of his husband, Alon.
"I promise that I will do my best to be worthy of the trust you have placed in me," he told Knesset members.
During his speech, Ohana emphasized that the new government "will not harm any child or any family." , in an attempt to soften the tone against the LGBTI community from some coalition parties.
Ohana thanked Netanyahu for the "courage and faith" he has given him so far and said that he and the Likud leader "have come a long way together" and "with God's help they will continue."
Occupying one of the most important strategic positions in the Knesset, the Speaker has a significant influence on the legislative agenda and pace, as well as on the conduct of sessions.
Israel's government was sworn in on Thursday, the government will be headed by Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, who was sworn in for the sixth time as Israeli prime minister.
The plenum vote was 63-5, with all coalition lawmakers voting in favor except for United Torah Judaism MK Yaakov Tesler, who was overseas.
