VIDEO/ The Afghan teacher tears up his diplomas live on TV: If my sister

A professor in Kabul tore up his diplomas live on television in Afghanistan to protest the Taliban's ban on female education.

The professor, named Ismail Mashal, is the founder of the private Mashal University in Kabul and also a lecturer at Kabul University. That moment was commented on by some local and international media as it was a difficult decision, but with full will on the part of the professor.

Years of career and effort were burned live on the show. According to him, the diplomas he had received no longer performed their function. He was very emotional and tearful at the decision.

"From today I no longer need these diplomas because this country is no longer a place for education. If my sister and my mother can't study, then I don't accept this education either," he said.

He added that the diplomas he burned were original diplomas and not copies. Video of his action has gone viral, including commentary from Shabnam Nasimi, the UK-based former policy adviser to the Minister for Afghan Resettlement and Minister for Refugees.

"Shocking scene as Kabul university professor destroys his diplomas on live TV in Afghanistan," Nasimi tweeted.

The Taliban announced on December 20 that university education for all female students had been suspended. This comes after they banned girls from attending secondary school, a decision made in March of this year.

Also, these two decisions follow a series of other bans on women, including their access to public spaces. In November, women were banned from entering all parks in Kabul. That same month, a Taliban official in Kabul announced that women would be banned from using gyms across the country.

Women are also required to wear face coverings and dress modestly in public according to Taliban rules.
