After many investigations, the FBI and the US intelligence agency have concluded that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the person who tried to kill Donald Trump acted alone and without any particular ideology.
With these results, CNN cites, the theory that there was a conspiracy against the former American President to eliminate him is rejected.
The investigators have managed to carry out an in-depth investigation on the phone of the aggressor, where it turns out that Thomas Matthew Crooks was a lonely, intelligent, modest person, who expressed an interest in weapons and was far from being interested in politics.
But Crooks' profile emerging nearly a week after the shooting has left authorities puzzling over a motive for his attack and has led investigators to speculate that his motives may have been less politically motivated and more about attack higher profile targets.
The investigation remains in the early stages, officials warn. However, Crooks seems similar to dozens of other youths who have committed mass murders across the US.
He had few close friends, he often went shooting at a range and did not appear to hold strong views that would suggest a politically motivated killing, CNN quoted intelligence officials as saying.
In addition to the former president, Crooks had done extensive research on President Joe Biden and had photos on his phone of other prominent figures from both parties.
He located the location of Trump's rally, as well as the upcoming Democratic National Convention, sources tell CNN, and found that Trump planned to appear just an hour's drive from his home in suburban Pittsburgh.
"Although he did not achieve his primary objective, the attacker was successful in many ways because he came close to doing something that no one has done in decades," a federal official told CNN, referring to the killing of a presidential candidate.
According to the FBI, the investigation is in an intensive phase, as the aggressor's relatives are also being questioned. But unlike other aggressors who often leave behind writings to explain their attacks, authorities have so far found few clues, in Crooks' bedroom or online.
