Following Starmer's resignation, Andy Burnham announces he will run for

Andy Burnham has announced he will run for Labour Party leadership following the announcement of Keir Starmer's resignation.

Thanking Starmer for what he has done for the party and Britain at a challenging time, he stressed:

"Keir has given extraordinary service to our country and I want to thank him for his leadership and commitment during such a challenging period. His decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is carried out in an orderly and responsible manner. I will stand as part of that process," he said.

Andy Burnham, who is backed by many Labour Party leaders for the leadership, became the favourite after being elected MP in the Makerfield by-election, beating Reform UK, which came second but by a margin of more than 9,000 votes.

This victory allowed the outgoing mayor of Manchester to increase the Labour Party's share of the vote from 45% in the 2024 general election to almost 55%.

Beyond the numbers, Burnham's victory ensured he overcame a significant hurdle in his leadership bid, as those wishing to run must be sitting MPs.
