The speaker of the Iranian parliament warned that the US military and Israel would be "legitimate targets of attack" if America attacks the Islamic Republic, as President Donald Trump has threatened.

Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf's statements are the first to include Israel on the list of possible targets for an Iranian attack. Qalibaf, a hard-liner, made the threat as lawmakers chanted "Death to America!" in parliament.

Israel is on high alert for a possible US intervention in Iran, according to the Times of Israel and Reuters. Such a possible US operation was discussed in a phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday. Iran has blamed the US for protests that erupted two weeks ago in the capital due to economic difficulties, which then spread throughout the country, with demands for the removal of religious authorities from power.

Donald Trump has declared that his country is "ready to help" the protest movement, warning that Iran is in "big trouble" for its efforts to suppress the protests.

The New York Times reports that the US already has a plan for Tehran, presented by the Pentagon to Trump, with a list of possible targets, including non-military ones in the capital.

The dilemma is no longer whether, but how and when to attack. On Saturday night, anti-government chants filled the streets of Tehran, with protesters fueling the largest movement against the Islamic republic in three years, despite heavy repression and internet blackouts.

Human rights groups reported dozens of deaths and expressed concern about the authorities' intensifying crackdown. Footage showed piles of bodies in overwhelmed hospitals and morgues, while the prosecutor general announced death sentences for protesters. Little information has emerged since the internet shutdown, with NetBlocks monitors saying that, due to the lack of internet, there is an information gap about what is happening in Iran.
