APOCALYPTIC VIEW/ Catastrophic floods in Spain, the number of victims reaches

The death toll from this week's floods has risen to at least 202 in Valencia alone, according to regional authorities.

This brings the total death toll to at least 205, after three deaths were previously reported in neighboring regions.

Emergency responders searched for missing people throughout the day, checking cars and buildings.

Why Spain experienced extreme flooding:

A combination of factors led to Spain's worst natural disaster this century.

Firstly, the country has been suffering from a drought for nearly two years – meaning that the soil was left hard and unable to absorb rainfall.

So when a year's worth of rain fell one day, it led to extreme flooding.

In the Valencian city of Chiva, more rain fell in eight hours than in the previous 20 months.

This was caused by a devastating weather system known locally as a DANA, or isolated high-level depression.

Such weather events occur when cold and warm air meet and produce powerful rain clouds.

Sometimes this can cause large hail storms and tornadoes.

This week's DANA was one of the three most intense storms of the last century in the Valencia region.
