Roberta Metsola has been re-elected president of the European Parliament.
First elected to this post in January 2022, the Maltese politician of the European People's Party (EPP) will remain in this role for another 2.5 years.
It received the support of the majority of the 720 newly elected members of the European Parliament. 562 MEPs voted for it.
The five-year term of the president of the Parliament has traditionally been split between the center-left Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the center-right EPP.
Before the vote, she pledged "strong leadership" and to continue pressing for Parliament's right to initiate legislation.
"This should be a House that cannot be afraid to lead and change," she said, paying tribute to the late former president David Sassoli.
" I will never shy away from making difficult decisions ," she added.
