A powerful fire swept through the coastal area of Palaia Fokaia, just 40 kilometers south of Athens, on Thursday, burning holiday homes and large areas of forest.
The flames have spread rapidly due to strong winds and extreme temperatures, which have reached up to 40°C, in the first heat wave of this summer in Greece.
More than 100 firefighters, supported by around 24 aircraft, are trying to bring the fire under control, while residents have been alerted.
The Athens region and several Aegean islands are at a fairly high risk of fires, due to extreme weather conditions.
Forecasts indicate that the heat wave will last until the weekend.
Earlier in the week, the Aegean island of Chios was engulfed by another major fire, which took four days to bring under control.
A state of emergency was declared and more than a dozen evacuation orders were issued. A woman was arrested on suspicion of starting the fire.
The Greek government has spent hundreds of millions of euros to compensate for damage from extreme weather and to equip the country with new firefighting equipment. This year alone, the number of firefighters has increased to 18,000, the highest figure ever.
According to scientists, climate change caused by human activity is significantly increasing the risk of extreme weather and prolonging heat waves around the world.
