"A hug to the proud Albanian people", Salvini to Ermal Meta: I
Ermal Meta and Matteo Salvini

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini publicly praised the artist of Albanian origin Ermal Meta, who competed in the 2026 Sanremo Festival with the song "Stella Stellina".

"I congratulate Ermal Meta and his perfect mastery of the Italian language," Salvini declared, focusing on the singer's fluency in Italian.

But this statement by Salvini was seen as a gaffe by the Italian media, which recalled that the Albanian musician has been in Italy for thirty years, since he came to Bari with his mother and sister, at the age of thirteen.

Salvini then expanded the discussion to the topic of immigration: "Millions of women and men born in foreign countries and perfectly integrated into our society live and work in Italy," the deputy prime minister continued.

"I appreciate and welcome them. I have always opposed illegal immigrants and criminals, and I am sure that Ermal Meta shares this sentiment. A hug to the proud Albanian people. Long live Sanremo, the Italian language and Italian music."

It all started after the press appearances of the singer who brought the song "Stella stellina" to the Sanremo Festival this year, when, when asked if he assessed an impoverishment of the language in song lyrics, he replied: "I don't know what will happen in the future, but there is certainly an impoverishment of the language. If the "Academia della Crusca" has said that the best lyrics are those written by an immigrant, ask yourself the question. I am a foreigner...".

From the press room came the joke: " Don't tell Salvini" , and the artist replied ironically: " Let's not tell him, he might have an embolism" . Eventually, Salvini also 'heard' in Sanremo and issued his own press release.

At the conference, however, Ermal Meta had another message at heart, which is also that of his song: " Today adults make much more noise than children - he said at the press conference - and this is what worries me. This is a 'silence' that we often impose on ourselves. You can't use certain words, you can't say Gaza, you can't say Palestine, as if it were blasphemy. But real blasphemy is something else, it is the fact that they are hidden, this is blasphemy!"
