American voters will have to choose the next President of the USA between the Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and the Republican Donald Trump.
Here's a look at what they stand for and how their policies compare on various issues.
inflation
Harris has said her priority once in office will be trying to lower food and housing costs for working families. She promises to stop rising food prices, make it easier for the have-nots to buy a home, increase housing supply and raise the minimum wage.
Inflation rose during the Biden presidency, as it did in many Western countries, partly due to post-Covid supply problems and the war in Ukraine.
Trump has promised to "end inflation and make America affordable again," and when asked, he says more oil drilling will lower energy costs.
He has promised to secure lower interest rates, something the president does not control, and he says deporting illegal immigrants will ease the pressure on housing. Economists warn that his promise to impose a higher tax on imports could raise prices.
taxes
Harris wants to raise taxes on big businesses and Americans making $400,000 a year. But she has also announced a series of measures that would ease the tax burden on families, including an extension of child tax credits.
She has distanced herself from Biden on the capital gains tax, supporting a more moderate increase from 23.6% to 28%, compared to his 44.6% proposal.
Trump proposes tax cuts worth trillions of dollars. He says he will finance them through economic growth and tariffs on imports. Analysts say both tax plans will add to the growing deficit, but Trump's more so.
abortion
Harris has placed abortion rights at the center of her campaign and continues to support legislation that would guarantee reproductive rights nationally.
Trump has struggled to find a consistent message on abortion. The three justices he appointed to the Supreme Court during his time as president were decisive in overturning the constitutional right to abortion, a 1973 decision known as Roe v. Wade.
Immigration
Harris was tasked with addressing the root causes of the crisis at the southern border and helped raise billions of dollars from the private sector to make regional investments aimed at stemming the flow north.
At the end of 2023, a record number of people crossed from Mexico, but numbers have fallen since then, reaching the lowest level in four years. In this campaign, she has toughened her stance and emphasized her experience as a prosecutor in California, going after human traffickers.
Trump has vowed to close the border by completing construction of the wall and increasing law enforcement. But he has called on Republicans to abandon a tough, bipartisan immigration bill backed by Harris. She says she will revive that deal if elected.
He has also promised the largest mass deportation of illegal immigrants in US history. Experts told the BBC that this would face legal challenges.
Foreign Policy
Harris has pledged to support Ukraine "for as long as necessary". She has promised that, if elected president, she will ensure that the US, not China, wins the "race for the 21st century".
She has long been a supporter of finding a solution between Israelis and Palestinians and has called for an end to the war in Gaza.
Trump has an isolationist foreign policy and wants the US to distance itself from conflicts in other parts of the world. He has said he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours through a negotiated deal with Russia, a move Democrats say would embolden Vladimir Putin.
Trump has positioned himself as a strong supporter of Israel, but has said little about how he would end the war in Gaza.
Business
Harris has criticized Trump's sweeping plan to impose tariffs on imports, calling it a national tax on working families that will cost each family $4,000 a year. Harris is expected to maintain tariffs the Biden-Harris administration has placed on some Chinese imports, such as electric vehicles.
Trump has made the tariffs a key campaign promise to protect American industry. He has proposed new tariffs of 10-20% on most imported foreign goods and much higher tariffs on those from China.
He has also promised to attract companies that stay in the US to make goods by offering them a lower corporate tax rate.
Climate
As vice president, Harris helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which has channeled hundreds of billions of dollars into renewable energy, credits and rebate programs for electric vehicles.
However, she has dropped her opposition to fracking, a technique for extracting gas and oil opposed by environmentalists.
Trump, while in the White House, repealed hundreds of environmental protections, including restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and vehicles. In this campaign, he has pledged to expand drilling in the Arctic and attacked electric cars.
GLOBAL HEALTH
Harris has been part of the White House administration during which prescription drug costs have been reduced and a $35 cap has been placed on the price of insulin.
Trump, who has often promised to repeal the Affordable Care Act, has said if elected he would improve it, without providing specifics. This act has been crucial to the health insurance of millions of other people.
He has called for taxpayer-funded fertility treatments, but that could run into opposition from Republicans in Congress.
Law and Order
Harris has tried to emphasize her experience as a prosecutor, in contrast to the fact that Trump has been convicted of a crime.
Trump has vowed to dismantle drug cartels, crack down on gang violence and rebuild Democratic-run cities that he says are rife with crime.
He has said he would use the army or the National Guard, a reserve force, to deal with opponents he calls "internal enemies" and "radical leftist lunatics" if they disrupt the election.
Weapons
Harris has made preventing gun violence a key promise, and she and Tim Walsh, both gun owners, often support stricter laws. But expanding controls or banning guns will require help from Congress.
Trump has positioned himself as a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, the constitutional right to bear arms. As he addressed the National Rifle Association in May, he said he was their best friend.
Marijuana
Harris has called for the decriminalization of marijuana for recreational use. She says many people have been sent to prison for possessing it and points to the disproportionate number of arrests for black and Latino men.
Trump has softened his approach and said it is time to end the "unnecessary arrests and imprisonment" of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use./BBC
