The famous singer Irene Cara has passed away at the age of 63.

It was the singer's manager who announced her death. He told Cara that she died at her home in Florida, but the cause is currently unknown.

In 1980 Cara rose to fame when she took on the role of Coco Hernandez and sang the title song Fame.

Her performance earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 1981 Golden Globe Awards.

Cara later wrote and sang the vocals for Flashdance… What A Feeling, from the 1983 blockbuster film Flashdance, and won a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
