Protests continued for the third evening in a row in several French cities after the killing of a teenager by the police as he disobeyed an order to stop the car.

Last night's protest was even bigger and more violent where in some cases the lives of ordinary residents were endangered.

In Naterres, the demonstrators were joined by the mother of 17-year-old Nahel, who demanded justice for her son.

The authorities were committed to deal with any possible situation. More than 40,000 police officers were deployed on the streets, as public transport was suspended after 21:00. A state of curfew was also imposed in the suburbs of Paris.

In Nanterre a bank burned down as flames threatened nearby houses. In Marseille, there were clashes between protesters and the police in the Old Port, which was evacuated by the police. In Lyon, where a building burned in the Villeurbanne district, a helicopter was dispatched from RAID, the special anti-riot unit.

Riots were also reported in central Paris, where at least a hundred masked people looted shops in Les Halles shopping centre. According to Le Figaro, which cites official sources, more than 255 people were arrested across the country overnight.

But the situation is not destined to improve. In the coming nights, a spread of violence is expected, where the police forces may also be the target.

The police officer who shot and killed Nahel is currently in prison. He has apologized to his family and his lawyer says he is "devastated".

He is accused of abuse of office and intentional murder.

The prosecution did not find that the legal conditions for the use of firearms by the police had been met and for this reason requested his arrest.
