Space missions that have amazed people: Why the SpaceX test is an unforgettable

Space missions have always fascinated people.

Dozens of more or less reliable films and books have shown the adventures of mythical characters, often considered heroes by their countries.

Space exploration is so important that for several decades it was a Cold War battleground between the United States and Russia, won over with Apollo 11 and its crew.

A lot has happened since then. For example, state investments have decreased, political projects have changed, and so has the perception of risk. In the 1960s we were willing to take greater risks including the fact that astronauts might not return to earth.

However, since then the progress made has been extraordinary and today there are those who would like to take man to Mars.

One person in particular: Elon Musk at the head of SpaceX, the aerospace company that a few days ago completed one of the most memorable space tests. Why?

In recent years, Elon Musk has managed to obtain public funding to plan and develop his space missions. It is about several billions that NASA has given to Musk's aerospace company.

Over the years, states have reduced their investments in this area. The United States federal budget earmarked for NASA reached an all-time high in 1966, when it exceeded 4.4% of the total budget. Then over the years those investments decreased significantly and today they are below 1%.

In other words, design and development in this area are very expensive, so it is better to trust the private sector.

Even the pharmaceutical world has more or less followed this path, right?

States invest less in research and when suddenly, as happened during the Covid pandemic, the need for a vaccine arises, we turn to the private sector because the public sector is not able to respond immediately, because over the years it has received less and less money .

But let's get back to SpaceX. In recent years, it has carried out numerous tests, often with negative results like that of the Falcon 9 last July. However, it must be said that before this failure many tests and missions have been successful.

But what happened on October 13? SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace company, has completed one of the most memorable space tests.

Until recently, it seemed impossible to fly a space rocket the size of a 20-story building, but SpaceX did it. The consequences of the successful test could even exceed that famous step forward for mankind, which Neil Armstrong took on July 20, 1969. Man could return to the moon and even go to Mars.

This is the promise of Elon Musk, owner of SpaceX. But it is precisely the soft landing of this rocket that can change everything. The rocket is used to propel the Starship, the largest space shuttle, into orbit.

But for every launch, the rocket must be destroyed and a new one always needs to be produced. However, this can be avoided if the missile manages to turn back and be able to return to the base from which it was launched. In this way, the time saving above all economic would be extraordinary, and would greatly help the development of the project.

But this success of Elon Musk's company a few weeks before the American elections can also be a success of Donald Trump. In fact, we know Musk supports him, he stood by his side after the failed attack in Pennsylvania and it was there, two months later, that Musk took the stage alongside him for the first time.

But how might this matter to the race for the White House?

Musk's official entrance on the scene reminds us that his presence is important above all from an economic point of view. In fact, so far the Trump campaign has raised less than half of Kamala Harris's funds and the balance is negative, Musk is funding the Republican election campaign with his America PAC. According to the most recent data available from federal figures, it currently exceeds $86 million.

But in the end, how much difference does Musk's support for Trump really make? We know that celebrity endorsements have historically never convinced so many people to vote. In this election campaign we had the first example with Taylor Swift's support for Kamala Harris, on the same evening as the presidential debate.

The next day, over 400,000 people followed the link Swift posted to register to vote on the government's website, but we don't know how many actually did so, and the polls then remained virtually silent. unchanged, and there was no sign of a clear impact on the youth vote.

So we can have the same limited influence on Musk's side, even after SpaceX's successes or the $47 offered to vote. The financial support of the billionaire is certainly very useful for the Republican campaign and this is the only change we can see in this presidential election at the moment./Bota.al
