Mexico's former security minister, Genaro Garcia Luna, was sentenced to 38 years in prison in the US for drug trafficking, becoming the highest-ranking Mexican official to be convicted of such a crime.

Considered the "architect" of the war on drugs in Mexico, Luna was one of the main allies of President Felipe Calderón, the man who took the initiative to destroy the drug cartels after pressure from the US.

54-year-old Garcia Luna is one of the most senior Mexican officials accused and convicted of drug trafficking. He quickly climbed the career ladder and became one of the most powerful men in Mexico. In addition to the post of minister from 2006 to 2012, he also held the post of head of the Federal Investigation Agency in Mexico in the period 2001-2005.

The accusations against Luna in Mexico date back several years. His involvement in drug trafficking and "double play" with Mexican cartels was also part of the script for the Netflix series, "El Chapo." It tells the story of one of the most notorious drug lords in the world, Joaquin Guzman. While Luna is not mentioned by name, the character that is adapted after his figure is called Conrado Sol (Sun), while Luna's last name means "moon" in Spanish.

Throughout the hit series, the high-ranking government official meets several times with exponents of drug cartels and receives large sums of money from them, something that at the time of the film was only an accusation against Luna, which turned out to be true according to the verdict of the American court.

The court ruling dictates that Luna took millions of dollars in bribes from drug traffickers to give them key information to avoid police operations, as he held various government posts, the highest being that of Minister of Public Security. Moreover, during his work, he had close relations with US DEA officials.

After leaving government office in Mexico, Luna moved to the U.S., where he was arrested in 2019. He denies the charges, and his lawyers said U.S. prosecutors based them on the testimony of dangerous criminals, making them implausible.

One of the main testimonies is that of the brother of Ismael Zambada Garcia, El Chapo's partner, who stated in court that on two occasions he had given a suitcase with 3 million dollars to Luna. Zambada was arrested in July of this year, while El CHapo was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 and is ending his days in the "Supermax" high security prison in Colorado.
