Iranian media: Khamenei hiding in an underground bunker north of Tehran
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, moved to an underground bunker in the Lavizan area, northeast of Tehran, hours after Israel launched its attacks on the Iranian capital in the early hours of last Friday, Iran International reported, citing two well-informed sources inside the country.

All members of Khamenei's family, including his son Mojtaba, are with him, the sources said.

According to media reports, this is the same shelter where the religious leader and his family were taken during Iran's operations against Israel, "True Promise 1" and "True Promise 2" in 2024. At that time, Mojtaba was by his side, but his other two sons, Massoud and Mostafa, were not with him.

On Sunday, Israel carried out its first strike on the Iranian city of Mashhad, which is more than 2,300 kilometers away. A diplomatic source in the Middle East told Iran International that the airstrike on Mashhad was a warning to Iran's supreme leader that he is not safe anywhere in the country.

The same diplomatic source added that Israel could have killed Khamenei on the first night of the operation, but the Israeli government chose to leave him alive, giving him one last chance to back down and announce the complete dismantling of Iran's nuclear program.

Donald Trump had given Khamenei a two-month deadline to agree to dismantle the uranium enrichment program, but the supreme leader ignored both American and Israeli warnings.

With the start of Israeli airstrikes, this "opportunity" is being offered again this time, sources say, to realistically assess Israel's military power and order the dismantling of the uranium enrichment program./ Iran International
