The European Court of Human Rights has accepted Fredi Beleri's request to examine irregularities during his arrest and detention two days before the municipal elections in Himara, reports Greek media outlet Kathimerini.

The ECHR has set June 26 as the date for reviewing MEP Beleri's request to provide a final resolution to the case.

If this is not achieved, both parties will be invited to present their arguments before the court.

Beleri himself reacted by saying that "today is the beginning, to recover what we won democratically."

Beleri: "The preliminary ruling of the European Court of Human Rights, by which my appeal against my illegal detention two days before the municipal elections in Himara is considered valid in principle, is a first exoneration, but at the same time a major one.

Justification for my unwavering faith in the European acquis and in democracy. Justification for the strategies against me, but also against the will of the Greek ethnic minority. Vindication, finally, for those who continue to fight for the rule of law and institutions in acceding Albania.

"I thank my lawyer, Professor Mr. Nikos Alivizato, who with his team handled the case. Today was the beginning, to recover what we gained democratically and deprived ourselves of through coups."
