A Ukrainian soldier on vacation in Venice saved the life of a man who had been stabbed in a fight in the alleys of the city's historic center.
It is likely that Yanis Tereshchenko's immediate intervention saved the young man, who had been wounded in the leg and was losing a large amount of blood.
The man, said to be Tunisian, is suspected of having been involved in a fight with another Tunisian. The motive for the fight is unclear.
He suffered a stab wound to the thigh, which is said to have severed his femoral artery.
Tereshchenko was returning to his hotel on Monday when he saw the victim lying on the ground, bleeding profusely, surrounded by panicked passersby.
He was able to use the first aid kit he had with him since joining the Ukrainian army three years ago.
"Lucky for the boy I had the first aid kit... The blood would have been flowing by the time the ambulance arrived," he wrote on X.
He posted two photos, one showing a large amount of blood on the stones of an alley and the other showing Italian paramedics caring for the victim.
"I saw that he had a deep knife wound on his thigh. I pulled out a tunic to stop the loss of more blood," the 32-year-old told Corriere del Veneto, a local newspaper.
"I know [the first aid kit] is a bit heavy and my family always tells me to leave it behind. But today, for the first time in three years, it was necessary. It was lucky that I had it with me at that moment," he said.

The victim had lost a lot of blood and was losing consciousness, Tereshchenko said.
"I tried to keep him awake until the doctors came. I don't know if he would have made it otherwise," he added.
"The people standing around were shocked, no one intervened or knew what to do. Unfortunately in these last years of the war I have seen a lot, so I did not hesitate to intervene," he added.
Tereshchenko said he had been a teacher before joining the Ukrainian army's Third Assault Brigade.
"I had a few days off and, seeing how much we love Italy, whenever we can, we come here, this time to Venice."
A shopkeeper who witnessed the stabbing said: "The attacker was viciously stabbing, first the victim's arms and then his leg. It was a violent and sustained attack with a really big knife."
Police are searching for the knifeman, who fled before paramedics arrived.
The attack took place on the Salizada San Canzian alley, not far from the famous Rialto Bridge which crosses the Grand Canal.
Tereshchenko continued his vacation and on Tuesday posted photos of the canals and churches of Venice.
Although Ukrainian men are restricted from leaving the country, soldiers are allowed to go abroad for vacation as long as they get permission from their commanders.
Military personnel are entitled to 15 days of foreign leave each year, according to the Kyiv Post.
