Dutch king apologizes for slavery: It is humiliating and inhumane

The 56-year-old monarch said during a ceremony commemorating the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Dutch colonies that he felt "personally deeply moved".

"Degrading and inhumane"  During the ceremony in Amsterdam's Oosterpark, where the Dutch national anti-slavery monument is located, King Willem-Alexander said: " Today I stand before you as your king and as part of the government and I apologize from the bottom of my heart and my soul ."

"Of all forms of slavery, slavery is the most degrading and inhuman." - said the Dutch king.

The Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, had since December of last year officially apologized on behalf of the government for the past actions of the Dutch state, calling slavery in the country's former colonies a "crime against humanity".

One of the greatest colonial powers

Since the 17th century the Netherlands was one of the greatest colonial powers. Over more than 200 years, the Dutch enslaved about 600,000 people, whom they shipped from Africa to South America and the Caribbean.

About 75,000 of them did not survive the transport, the king emphasized in his speech.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands was one of the last countries in Europe to officially abolish slavery on July 1, 1863. In recent years, there has been growing awareness that the wealth of Dutch cities and museums is rooted in the country's colonial history.
