Who is the 92-year-old judge assigned to the Maduro case?

The high-profile criminal case against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been assigned to 92-year-old federal judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, who was nominated and confirmed to the post by President Bill Clinton in 1998.

Hellerstein has served as a senior judge in the Southern District of New York since 2011. During his career, he has presided over a number of sensitive cases, including those related to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as well as other cases involving terrorism and national security.

Over the summer, former Venezuelan general and former intelligence chief, Hugo Carvajal Barrios, pleaded guilty before Judge Hellerstein to charges related to narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.

Hellerstein has also been in the media spotlight in recent years for his rulings in cases involving U.S. President Donald Trump. He rejected Trump's requests to transfer the criminal hush money case to federal court, ruling that reimbursements to Michael Cohen — who brokered payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels — did not constitute official acts of the presidency. Trump continues to challenge that ruling.

In the spring, Hellerstein also issued a ruling barring the Trump administration from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans, criticizing sending people to a foreign prison “with little hope of due process or return.”
