The Slovak government has recently been involved in a battle that has provoked tensions with Brussels. According to "Politico", Prime Minister Robert Fico has made it clear that he intends to close the Special Prosecutor's Office that deals with corruption files.
This institution has significantly contributed to the violation of human rights - Fico is quoted.
The Slovak Special Prosecutor's Office was established in 2004 and investigates corruption cases, but also serious crimes and abuse of EU funds. The newspaper in question points out that many of those investigated and then convicted were people from Fico's party, "Smer", for issues related to his previous mandate as head of government.
Regarding this development, the European Commission has sent a letter to the Minister of Justice, through which it has requested the cancellation of the legislative process, while the President Zuzana Čaputová has described it as a "very unfortunate step and very dangerous intervention by the political authorities in matters of the prosecutor's office".
