Political and military crisis shakes Ukraine's leadership

Ukraine is engulfed in a new political and military crisis in its fourth year of confronting Russian occupation. The cause is a bitter institutional clash between the Minister of Defense, 35-year-old Mykhailo Fedorov — a technology innovator who modernized drone warfare — and the Commander of the Armed Forces, 60-year-old General Oleksandr Syrskyi, trained during the Soviet era.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision to side with the general and dismiss the popular minister has sparked waves of protests across the country, involving soldiers, veterans, and senior military figures.

The new vision against the old guard

Mykhailo Fedorov, who took office six months ago, is widely credited with transforming Ukraine into a global drone technology powerhouse, cracking down on corruption in military procurement and limiting the Russian military's access to the Starlink satellite network. After his dismissal, Fedorov openly accused Syrsky of blocking reforms and maintaining an outdated hierarchical culture.

"We transformed Ukraine into a global technology leader and a powerful defense power. It played a role in the fact that warfare has completely changed due to new technology, but the establishment was resisting change," said Mykhailo Fedorov, former Ukrainian Defense Minister.

On the other hand, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, with a long experience since the Soviet period, defends the classic command structure. Although he is credited with the successful defense of Kiev in 2022 and the counteroffensive in Kharkiv, he is known among the soldiers as “The Butcher” due to the heavy human losses during the Battle of Bakhmut.

"I'm not fighting the defense ministry. I'm fighting Russia. In the army, you follow orders and do your job," said General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Popular reaction and resonance in Moscow

Fedorov's departure was seen by protesters as an attempt by Zelenskyy to protect old military structures and remove a potential political rival. In a sign of revolt, the deputy commander of the Air Force resigned, while soldiers on leave joined the rallies demanding a new generation of generals who protect the lives of troops on the front lines.

Political analysts in Kiev have called the president's move a "major miscalculation" as he underestimated public support for the young reformer.

Mutually, Russian military bloggers and commentators in Moscow have welcomed Fedorov's dismissal. They hope that the removal of the man who orchestrated the drone attacks on Russian oil refineries will create political divisions and weaken the Ukrainian military's strike capabilities.
