Kremlin: Withdrawal of troops does not mean that Kherson will not continue to be

The Kremlin has stated that the withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson would not change the regime in the region, which Moscow has declared part of Russia after its annexation by Ukraine.

Russia claims Kherson and three other Ukrainian regions as part of it after holding referendums in September, a process that Kiev and Western governments have denounced as illegal.

But on Wednesday, Rusai announced that her forces would withdraw from the city of Kherson in the face of a major counterattack from Ukraine.

In a teleconference with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the status of the region will not change.

"It is part of the Russian Federation. There are no and there can be no changes," said Peskov.

He said Moscow did not regret announcing the annexation of Kherson and three other regions at a triumphant event in Moscow on September 30.

In the first public statements from the Kremlin since Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the withdrawal of Russian forces from the city of Kherson on the west bank of the Dnieper River, Peskov said it was a decision made by the Defense Ministry and that he had nothing to add.
