Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has proposed the creation of a joint European nuclear capacity, arguing that Europe can no longer rely on the existing security system.
In an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper, Fischer said:
"American security guarantees are no longer reliable from this moment on. Germany undoubtedly has a responsibility for leadership in Europe, but always only together with others."
He clarified that this is not about a German nuclear bomb, but about a joint nuclear weapon of the European Union countries, as a measure to ensure the protection of the continent in an increasingly unstable global climate.
Fischer also said that if he were young today, he would join the army:
"Times have changed. We are threatened. We must protect ourselves."
He also emphasizes that disarmament is no longer an option. Military armament is indispensable for the defense of Europe. Only through force and deterrence can an attack be prevented: only in this way can an “ aggressive neighbor ” be stopped from a possible attack.
"I never imagined I would ever say this. My entire political career has shown otherwise."
Fischer's proposal comes at a time of intensified debate over European strategic autonomy and the future of NATO, as international tensions rise.
