The past never seems to be forgotten.

Or at least that's how it happens in relations between some countries.

In this case, the two countries are Ukraine and Poland.

These days Warsaw has given a shocking ultimatum to Kiev.

Poland demands that Ukraine apologize for past sins, including the massacres that culminated in the summer of 1943 but continued into 1945, where some 100,000 Poles were killed, or else prevent their membership in the European Union.

In Kiev, they are shocked by this request, since Poland has been a loyal ally of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian aggression in February 2022, but now it is turning into a threat to the European dream.

Warsaw's message was conveyed to Kiev by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski, who stopped by for a three-day visit to Ukraine.

In his conversation with his counterpart Andriy Sibih, the head of Polish diplomacy raised the topic of the Volyn massacre, demanding an apology from Kiev.

Sikorski apparently had the most high-profile talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to a source close to the Polish government who disclosed this to TVP World.

After the meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland posted on X saying that they discussed, in addition to the situation at the front, "the issue of the exhumation of the victims of the Volhynia massacre and their reburial."

The Volhynia massacre was an act of genocide by Ukrainian nationalists during World War II against the Polish inhabitants of the region that is now western Ukraine.

The issue remains a bone of contention between Warsaw and Kiev, as Ukraine refuses to allow the exhumation of the victims while using its instigators and perpetrators as national icons meant to inspire its soldiers in the fight against Russian invaders.

The Polish source told TVP World that Sikorski tried to convince Zelensky to agree to "exhuming the victims and giving them a proper burial, to get the problem out of the way and not turn into an issue with the Poles".

" The request was not accepted by the Ukrainian side, which in turn issued a list of demands that it expected Poland to fulfill ," the source told TVP World.
