Several of President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet appointees were targeted by "violent threats," including bomb threats, a spokeswoman for the incoming US president said Wednesday.

The threats were made Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Law enforcement acted quickly to ensure the safety of the targeted individuals, spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

She did not elaborate on who had been threatened and did not discuss the nature of the threats in question.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a statement regarding the threats.

“The FBI is aware of numerous bomb threats and assault incidents targeting administration appointees, and we are working with our law enforcement partners. We take all potential threats seriously and, as always, encourage the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious," the statement said.

Spokeswoman Leavitt said among the threats in question were false reports to law enforcement of a crime at a particular address, with the intent of inciting a heavy-handed and armed law enforcement response to a particular individual's home.
