Azerbaijan is working behind the scenes to ease tensions between Israel and Turkey, Israeli sources confirm, after a week marked by an Israeli attack on a base in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's warning to Ankara, as well as Turkey's arrest warrant and Interpol's red notice request for the Israeli leader.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev initiated direct dialogue between Israel and Turkey in April 2025. At that time, a Turkish delegation led by the head of the National Intelligence Organization, Ibrahim Kalin, and an Israeli delegation led by then-national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, held meetings in Baku under Aliyev's auspices.
These talks led to the establishment of an operational coordination mechanism between the two countries in Syria, which functioned effectively for a long period.
Now it appears that efforts are being made to revive this mechanism and renew direct dialogue, with the aim of preventing miscalculations that could lead to escalation.
A source familiar with the matter said that Azerbaijani officials are deeply concerned by the deterioration of relations between Israel and Turkey, both close partner countries of Baku.
"Have you and Turkey lost your minds? You are our friends, and Turkey is also our friend," said an Azerbaijani official.
"What should we do if, by any chance, you start fighting? That's precisely why it's important that tensions are reduced immediately."
The United States is also working behind the scenes to ease tensions, but there is a marked distrust in Israel of US envoy Tom Barrack. His comments in an interview on Friday prompted an unusual reaction from Defense Minister Israel Katz over the weekend, Ynet reports.
This puts Azerbaijan in a particularly advantageous position. Baku enjoys the trust of both Israel and Turkey, and has previously proven that it can mediate to overcome differences between them.
Azerbaijan is already sending humanitarian aid to Syria, supports normalization there, and sees the country as a territory with significant energy potential.
As a result, Baku has a clear strategic interest in preventing a clash between Israel and Turkey and restoring the coordination mechanisms that previously helped keep friction in Syria under control.
