The US will not allow ISIS to reestablish its capabilities in Syria, President Joe Biden said during a speech at the White House.

"We are aware of the fact that ISIS will try to take advantage of any gap to reestablish its capabilities in Syria, we will not allow that," President Biden said.

According to the Pentagon, airstrikes were carried out against "over 75 targets" linked to the so-called Islamic State in the country.

Meanwhile, Israeli ground forces crossed the demilitarized zone on the border between Israel and Syria over the weekend and entered the country for the first time since the Yom Kippur War in October 1973: writes the New York Times, citing two anonymous Israeli officials.

The deployment came amid the advance of rebels who yesterday overran Damascus and forced President Assad to flee. Israeli forces are said to now control the summit of Mount Hermon, on the Syrian side of the border, and several other locations considered essential to stabilizing control of the area.

Last Saturday, during a visit to the border with Syria, Israel's Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said the army was monitoring rebel forces to ensure they "do not go in our direction."

"We are closely following what is happening" to "ensure that they do not get confused and do not go in our direction," Halevi said, promising a "very, very strong defensive response" in case of threats. Israel, writes the NYT, has been operating covertly in Syria for many years as part of the current conflict with Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group that fought in Syria in support of the now-toppled Assad government.
