A former commander of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, which fought in Ukraine, said he has arrived in Norway and is seeking asylum after his life was in danger because he witnessed the killing and ill-treatment of Russian prisoners sent to the front line. the front. Andrei Medvedev says in a video posted by the rights group "Gulagu.net" that he had crossed the border and entered Norway before being stopped by the Norwegian police.
Andrei Medvedev says he was hired by the Wagner mercenary group on July 6, 2022 with a four-month contract. He had been orphaned before joining the Russian army and had served prison time before being hired by the Wagner Group. Medvedev says he escaped after witnessing the killing of deserters from the Russian army captured by the mercenary group.
"On July 6, 2022, I signed a contract with this company (Wagner PMC) and left for Ukraine. I became the commander of the first squad. In August, they began bringing prisoners from various Russian prisons to serve in the army. After the arrival of the prisoners, Wagner no longer considered us as human beings", says former mercenary Medvedev during a conversation with Vladimir Osechkin, founder of the rights group "Gulagu.net". The former commander asked for the help of this group to leave Russia as his life was in danger.
He says he crossed the barbed-wire border and escaped being shot by Russian border patrol dogs as he ran through the woods toward Norway.
"I know of three cases, when wounded prisoners who tried to escape from hospitals were shot dead. Also, 10 people were shot at the training ground in front of the prisoners who had just arrived. The goal was to scare people, about what can happen to those who refuse to fight," says former Russian mercenary Andrei Medvedev.
Norwegian police said they had arrested a foreign national after he illegally crossed the Russian border into the Arctic on January 13.
"Around 01:58 on Friday, a person was arrested in the Pasvikdalen valley on suspicion of illegally crossing the Norwegian-Russian border, in the Skroeytnes area. An individual contacted the civilian population of the area. He was arrested by a border patrol consisting of soldiers and policemen," said police officer Terjei Sirma-Tellefsen. The police said that the detainee is seeking asylum but did not give any other details.
His Norwegian lawyer, Brynjulf Risnes, told TV2 television that Mr Medvedev had spent a few dramatic hours.
"They fired at him while chasing him with border dogs. The whole event resembles a spy movie, where the last minute is crucial. When he crossed the border he saw the bright light of a house and ran there. A woman came out there and he asked her to call the police, who arrived very quickly", says the Norwegian lawyer.
He says that his client participated in the war in Ukraine but that he had no contact with the civilian population. The founder of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said in a statement that Mr. Medvedev had been part of a Norwegian Wagner unit and had mistreated prisoners.
In interviews with the Gulagu.net network, the former mercenary Medvedev said that he had seen the murder and ill-treatment of Russian prisoners who were sent to the war front by the Wagner group. He says losses were heavy after Wagner began sending large numbers of prisoners to the front in the second half of 2022.
"He has applied for asylum in Norway and has to go through the entire analysis process to verify if he is who he claims to be and if he is telling the truth. It is a process that is followed very carefully by the Norwegian authorities", says lawyer Brynjulf Risnes.
