Israel considers buying anti-submarine aircraft amid concerns about Turkey

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are considering the possibility of purchasing American Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, specialized in reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare, at a time when developments in Turkey's naval fleet are increasingly considered a strategic challenge.

According to a source quoted by the Jerusalem Post, discussions are underway within defense structures about purchasing the multi-role aircraft, originally designed for the US Navy.

The P-8 Poseidon is built on a civilian platform but has been adapted for military missions. It is used for maritime patrol, submarine detection, and long-range surveillance operations.

The aircraft has a crew of nine and an operational range of around 2,200 kilometers, which can be extended through aerial refueling.

It is equipped with advanced naval radars, acoustic sensors, electro-optical and infrared systems, as well as equipment that enables the detection of diesel-powered submarines. It can also carry torpedoes, bombs and naval mines to strike targets above and below the water surface.

The source stressed that Israel currently possesses high capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, but admitted that purchasing the P-8 Poseidon would be a very costly investment under current conditions.

According to him, the possibility of realizing this project would increase if the aircraft were included in a broader strategic agreement between Israel and the United States administration.

The interest in this platform is also linked to the development of the Turkish submarine fleet. The Turkish Navy operates more than 10 submarines with diesel-electric engines, while it is building a new generation of submarines equipped with an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which allows them to remain submerged for longer periods without having to surface.
