The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed that they have launched airstrikes on the Iranian capital, Tehran, as well as the Lebanese capital, Beirut. International media have published photos showing plumes of black smoke in the sky above Beirut's southern suburbs.
"The IDF is currently carrying out simultaneous strikes against military targets in Tehran and Beirut," it said in a statement.
IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee said that "a wave of extensive airstrikes" was underway.
The attacks come about an hour after the IDF issued an "urgent warning" to people in the southern suburbs of Beirut and dozens of villages, urging them to evacuate.
The IDF had said it was targeting command centers and storage facilities belonging to Hezbollah.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with a wave of attacks across the region.
