Romagna hit by powerful storm

A severe storm with rain, hail and winds exceeding 100 km/h hit Romagna in Italy overnight, causing serious damage across the province. Flooding, hundreds of fallen trees, dozens of damaged vehicles and damage to beach resorts and crops were caused by the rain, strong winds and hail.

No injuries or missing people have been reported, but the situation remains evolving and rescue operations are ongoing, Corriere della Sera reports. The Emilia-Romagna region is preparing to declare a regional state of emergency, while damage along the coast is expected to be assessed.

The provinces of Rimini, Forlì-Cesena and Ravenna were among the hardest hit. Over 70 millimeters of rain and wind gusts of up to 120 km/h fell on the affected areas within 30-60 minutes.

In Rimini, seven underpasses were flooded and are expected to reopen in the coming hours. The regional fire department has received over 300 reports and requests for intervention regarding fallen trees, branches and flooding. Ten fire brigade teams and six Provincial Civil Protection teams have been dispatched.

23 people were evacuated from a stranded train on the Rimini-Ravenna line after a tree fell on the railway near Bellaria-Igea Marina.

In Milano Marittima, several areas were blocked by flooding and fallen trees, around 265 in total, which hit and damaged dozens of parked cars.

There is also serious damage on the beaches: broken umbrellas, destroyed structures. However, in other areas, beach and tourism have continued as service has not stopped in the undamaged areas along the riviera.

The Civil Protection Department has issued a yellow alert for today. No further rainfall is expected, but the situation remains under observation. Rain is expected in the Emilia-Romagna Apennines area.
