ITALY/ Almost 1 million cases of flu, young people are also at risk

The number of flu cases in Italy remains high and has increased compared to last week. According to the Italian media, between December 25 and 31, more than 1 million Italians "took bed" from respiratory viruses, more than a third from the flu.

Hospitals and emergency rooms are under stress in these first days of the new year, but what is already particularly worrying is the fact that there is an increase in more severe forms of flu accompanied by pneumonia even in young people.

"This year's flu" actually appears to have a higher pathogenicity than other years, and we are seeing more hospitalizations for pneumonia in healthy, young patients. Some of these patients require hospitalization and in some cases the use of of intensive care," explains Marco Falcone, director of the department of infectious diseases at Pisan University Hospital.

In addition, pneumonia caused by influenza "tends to be complicated by bacterial superinfections, such as those caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Pneumococcus."

It is not yet clear whether these particularly severe forms are due to the decline of immunity to influenza viruses after two years of the pandemic or more aggressive viral variants.
