Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of former US President Donald Trump, has been charged with money laundering, fraud and conspiracy.

The 68-year-old is accused of defrauding donors at a fundraiser to help Donald Trump keep his promise to build a wall on the border with Mexico as a deterrent to immigration.

Prosecutors in New York allege that Bannon lied to donors and diverted some of the money to two associates. The former chief strategist of the White House has said that he is being persecuted.

Bannon surrendered to authorities in New York state on Thursday after a grand jury found six criminal charges against him. Handcuffed as he walked past reporters in court, he denied the charges.

"This is what happens in the last days of a dying regime," he said. "They will never shut me up. They will have to kill me first."

According to the indictment against him, Bannon told donors he was "kind of a volunteer" for the nonprofit We Build the Wall, which raised more than $25 million from thousands of people online. Despite his vow that "not a penny" would be pocketed by him, or others, Bannon reportedly diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars to two associates.

Federal prosecutors filed charges against Bannon and two others, Brian Kolfage and Andre Badolato in 2020. But while Kolfage and Badolato pleaded guilty to the charges, Bannon received a presidential pardon on Trump's last day in office last year and it was then dropped from the case.

However, the pardons only apply to federal crimes, and prosecutors in New York state pursued similar charges against Bannon.

"Stephen Bannon acted as the architect of a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud thousands of donors across the country including hundreds of Manhattan residents," District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is leading the investigation, said in a statement Thursday.

Separately in July, Bannon was found guilty of contempt of the US Congress after he defied a subpoena from the committee investigating last year's Capitol riots. He will be sentenced in the case next month and could face up to two years in prison.
