Iranians elect the new president, Pezeshkian: We extend our hand for cooperation

Reformist and veteran lawmaker, Masud Pezeshkian, has been elected as the new president of Iran. He triumphed in the runoff against the former nuclear negotiator, the conservative Saeed Xalili.

Local election authorities announced that Pezeshkian received more than 16 million votes against his ultra-conservative rival's 13.5 million. 30.5 million voters participated in these elections out of 61.4 million with the right to vote.

"We will extend our hand of friendship to everyone. We are the people of this land and we need everyone's help for the progress of Iran", were the first words of the elected president Massoud Pezeshkian.

The snap election was held following the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last month.
