US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News that he knew in advance about Israel's plans to attack Iran, but reiterated that the US was not involved.

Washington, he added, had notified at least one key ally in the Middle East that the attack was coming. Trump stressed that the US was ready to defend itself and Israel in the event of retaliation by Iran.

"I always hope for negotiations," he said, adding that Iran "cannot have a nuclear weapon."
