Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that Islamic countries must establish an alliance against what he called a "growing threat" from Israel to "occupy territories".

Erdogan made the comments after Israeli forces shot dead an American-Turkish woman who took part in a protest against the expansion of Jewish settlements in the usurped West Bank on Friday.

"The only step that will stop Israeli arrogance, Israeli banditry and state terrorism of Israel is an alliance of Islamic states," Erdogan told a school association event in Istanbul.

He said the steps Turkey has taken to improve relations with Egypt and Syria are aimed at "creating a line of solidarity against the growing threat of territorial expansion" that threatens both Lebanon and Syria.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Erdogan's statement was "a dangerous and inflammatory lie."

He accused the Turkish leader of working with Iran for years to undermine moderate Arab regimes in the region.

Erdogan hosted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Ankara this week, with whom he spoke about the Gaza war and how to repair long-broken relations. It was the first visit by an Egyptian president to Turkey in 12 years.

In July, Erdogan said Turkey would send an invitation to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "at any time" for possible talks to mend relations between the two countries. Relations between them broke down in 2011, after the outbreak of civil war in Syria.

The Israeli military said Friday it was reviewing reports that a foreign national was "killed as a result of shootings in the area".

"Details of the incident and the circumstances of how she was shot are being examined," she said. /REL
