The family of 24-year-old Gaia Costa, the young woman who was fatally injured when she was hit by a car driven by the wife of the Lufthansa CEO in the Porto Cervo area of Sardinia, are "shocked".
According to local media, doctors and rescue teams fought for 20 minutes to keep the 24-year-old alive after she suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a BMW X5 driven by Viviane Spohr.
The 24-year-old's father is a prominent member of the Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Lavoratori, one of the largest trade union federations in Italy.
The family's lawyer said that "my clients have full faith in the work of justice."
Eyewitnesses reported that the unfortunate 24-year-old woman was hit by the SUV driven by Spohr while walking in a crosswalk, adding that she also made a signal with her hands to alert the 51-year-old driver.
An autopsy on the 24-year-old's body is expected to take place on Wednesday, with local media noting that the investigative work is being carried out with delays as all documents related to Spohr need to be translated into German.
What does the wife of the CEO of Lufthansa say?
Spohr's lawyer described how it all happened from his client's perspective. According to him, his client had stopped at the crosswalk as normal and started again, thinking that the pedestrians had already crossed.
"Ms. Spohr stopped at the crosswalk, this was confirmed by witnesses," Angelo Merlini told BILD. "When she saw a group of pedestrians crossing the crosswalk, she waited. Then she drove off, not realizing that the girl was still on the crosswalk. She hit her with the car, which is automatic and very heavy, at a very low speed."
He also insisted that the 51-year-old never left the scene: "Instead, she stopped the vehicle, got out immediately and attempted to provide first aid. However, after an initial attempt to revive her, she lost consciousness."
The 51-year-old was not detained and was allowed to return to Germany, although she faces charges of involuntary manslaughter. "The authorities did not consider it necessary to detain her, as she had no intention of fleeing," her lawyer explains.
