Ukrainian journalist: Kiev is closer than ever to recognizing Kosovo's
The Ukrainian journalist who is staying in Kosovo, Daria Mescheriakova

The Ukrainian journalist who is staying in Kosovo, Daria Mescheriakova, says that Ukraine is closer than ever to recognizing Kosovo's independence. According to her, the most appropriate time for recognition would be when Kosovo receives candidate status for the Council of Europe.

The Ukrainian journalist, whose country has been facing Russian military aggression since February 24, says Ukraine's victory will also mark the end of Russian influence.

In an interview for KosovaPress, she also talks about the fragile situation between Kosovo and Serbia, for which she emphasizes that she does not see any danger, since Serbia cannot do anything without Russia, while the latter is focused on the war in Ukraine. Occurring in a new global situation, Mescheriakova says that there are two moments when her country could recognize Kosovo.

"It doesn't really mean that it means something, and it will lead to something. We have a very difficult situation with Kosovo, and when Kosovo declared independence in 2008, our then president Viktor Yushchenko, he was very afraid of the support movements in Crimea. But I think it was not true, nothing was going to happen with Crimea, but he was afraid that it would, while President Yanukovych was completely pro-Russian and it was impossible to recognize Kosovo - absolutely not.

Then the war broke out, the first war, when Russia invaded us and they took Crimea and occupied Donbass, so it was not possible, and with this war, with Zelensky it is also not possible, but I think now we are more closer than ever to knowing Kosovo only because, firstly, we are not on the Russian side, secondly, we will join civilization, and thirdly, I think that the best moment for us to know Kosovo is either when when the war ends, but it will take a while, or when Kosovo will be given the candidate status, then I think it will happen before the war ends, and I think then we will know Kosovo", she says.

Speaking about the security situation, the Ukrainian journalist in Kosovo says that she sees no real danger from Serbia. This is because, as she says, President Aleksandar Vučić is threatening and misinforming against Kosovo just to make a show.

"I don't believe that the Serbian army can do anything against NATO, without NATO, yes, it would be really scary to stay here, I would leave, but you have NATO for a reason. "Vucic only needs this show, this is a show, an actor, and he can't do anything with his army, especially when Russia is at war with Ukraine and I can't support him," she says.

My first time was in 2011, when I realized that everything we were told about the war in Kosovo was not true, and the stories about it. But I never lived here, I just came as a short-term visit to collect some stories, to travel a little, and then I have to move on… So, and now I live here and see from the inside what life is like. I can't say that my opinion has changed now, because I have always known Kosovo well", she says.
