Fear of the spread of war, Iran reacts: We do not want escalation, but Israel

Iran declared this Monday that it is not seeking to escalate the conflict in the Middle East, but stressed that its main enemy, Israel, must be "punished". The statements were made by the country's foreign ministry, at a time when the fear of escalation of the conflict is too great.

Western countries have asked relatives of diplomats in Lebanon to withdraw from the country for fear of an expansion of the conflict.

The UK Foreign Office said that due to a "highly volatile security situation" in Lebanon amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran-backed militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas, relatives of British embassy staff in Beirut will to leave.

Over the weekend, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy called on UK nationals to leave Lebanon immediately as the consequences of a wider conflict in the region "could be catastrophic".

Meanwhile, the Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, said it carried out a drone attack in northern Israel this Monday.

The attack comes as fears of a regional conflict have grown after last week's killing of a top Hezbollah commander in Lebanon, and in Iran the killing of the political leader of Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and European union.

In a statement, Iran-backed Hezbollah said it targeted a military base in northern Israel in response to "attacks and killings" carried out by Israel in several villages in southern Lebanon.

The attack does not appear to be part of a harsh response that was expected regarding the assassination of Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut last week, REL writes.

The Israeli military said that fire services are working to put out the fire that broke out as a result of the attack in Ajelet Hashahar.

Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire on an almost daily basis since the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas began on October 7.

The assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh last week in Tehran, Iran, and the killing of Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut have heightened tensions in the region as Israel braces for a response from Iran and its allied militias.
