Belarusian human rights lawyer Ales Bialiatski, 60, won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2022. But who is Ales Bialiatski and is he still in prison? He is a prominent Belarusian human rights activist who is currently being held in prison without trial.
Bialitski is the founder of the country's Viasna Human Rights Center, which was established in 1996 in response to a brutal street protest by Belarus's authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko.
"He has dedicated his life to the promotion of democracy and peaceful development in his country," the Nobel Peace Prize committee said.
He was arrested and jailed first in 2011 and then in 2014 on tax evasion charges that he has always denied. He was arrested again in 2020 after mass protests over what the opposition says were rigged elections in Belarus that kept Lukashenko in power.
"Despite tremendous personal hardships, Bialiatski has not given an inch in his fight for human rights and democracy in Belarus," the committee said.
