Finland's Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo , said on Wednesday that authorities in his country are investigating damage to underwater power cables connected to Estonia.
An unplanned outage on the 'Estlink 2' line occurred during the day, according to the announcement of the Finnish company Fingrid, reducing production capacity to 358 megawatts from over 1,000, which is its full capacity.
"Despite the fact that we are on Christmas Eve, the authorities are on standby to investigate the matter," said Prime Minister Orpo through a publication on the social network X.
The outage did not affect Finland's electricity supply, he added.
Authorities in the region have been on high alert to respond to possible cases of sabotage after a spate of damage to power cables, gas pipelines and telephone connections in recent years.
However, submarine cables often face technical problems and interruptions caused by accidents.
"An investigation into the incident has been launched," Fingrid CEO Arto Pahki said in a statement.
