More than 1,000 German military vehicles have arrived in Lithuania for large-scale exercises in NATO's eastern flank, German news agency dpa reported on Saturday.
The two cargo ships transported combat vehicles, armored vehicles, military trucks and other equipment and personnel from the German port of Rostock through the Baltic Sea to Lithuania, a member of the European Union and NATO.
After arriving at the port of Klaipeda, a caravan of the 37th Armoured Infantry Brigade headed for Pabrade and other Lithuanian military bases, a German Bundeswehr spokesman said on Saturday.
In Lithuania, the army and vehicles will participate in large-scale exercises called Quadriga 2025, focused on defending the Baltic region in conditions of crisis and war.
Lithuania will become the focus of the Bundeswehr's military involvement in the coming years, dpa points out.
In response to the changed security situation in Europe and Russia's aggressive behavior, the 45th Armored Brigade, called Lithuania, is slowly being established in this Baltic state. It should be fully operational by 2027 and have 5000 soldiers.
Lithuania borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Russia's ally Belarus.
