In the early hours of Saturday, rescue teams from El Salvador concluded an operation that lasted more than 13 hours in Playa Grande, in the Venezuelan state of La Guaira, by extracting 15-year-old Camila Sofía Medina Rivas and her dog, Chanel, alive.
Both had been trapped for more than 50 hours on the ninth floor of a building that collapsed as a result of Wednesday's two earthquakes.
The operation was carried out in three stages. After establishing initial contact, rescue teams were forced to break down several walls to reach the girl safely. The dog was first pulled out, and the 15-year-old girl was rescued immediately afterwards, who was completely unharmed.
El Salvador's President, Nayib Bukele, announced the news by declaring: "We saved Camila! Thank God for using us in this way. Strength Venezuela."
This rescue comes just hours after another operation in the same area, during which the same rescue teams pulled 39-year-old Nayarit Colmenares from the rubble, who had also been trapped for more than 50 hours.
