The United States of America imposed sanctions on 10 Iranian individuals and two Iranian companies on Wednesday. The sanctions follow the US government's response to ongoing cyber activities by Iranian actors.

The Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) says it “ sanctioned ten individuals and two entities for their roles in conducting malicious cyber acts, including ransomware activity. Today's appointments are part of a joint action with the Department of Justice, Department of State, Federal Bureau of Investigation, USA. Cyber Command, National Security Agency, and Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency. The individuals and entities identified today are all affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This action continues the series of OFAC designations aimed at protecting Americans from ransomware activity, ransomware facilitators, and other cybercrimes."

"Ransomware actors and other cybercriminals, regardless of their origin or base of operation, have targeted businesses and critical infrastructure across the border — directly threatening the physical security and economy of the United States and other nations," said the under secretary . of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson.

"We will continue to take coordinated action with our global partners to combat and prevent ransomware threats, including those linked to the IRGC."

The Treasury Department notes that Ransomware incidents have disrupted critical services and businesses around the globe, including schools, government offices, hospitals and emergency services, transportation, energy and food companies. Reported ransomware payments in the United States reached over $590 million in 2021, compared to a total of $416 million in 2020. The US government estimates that these payments represent only a fraction of the economic damage caused by malicious cyber activities.

“Today's action demonstrates the US government's commitment to disrupting the infrastructure and activity of ransomware actors. The United States will not tolerate malicious cyber activities," the announcement states, among other things.

Iran is in the center of attention recently for cyber attacks, including Albania.

Regarding the attacks on Albania, the US Treasury Department on Friday sanctioned Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib for involvement in cyber activities against the United States and its allies.
