Billionaire Elon Musk, who is expected to join President-elect Donald Trump's administration as a foreign policy adviser, joined Germany's election campaign on Friday, calling the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party the country's savior.

The AfD is in second place in the polls, posing an obstacle to center-right or center-left parties winning a majority in the election, but Germany's main parties, most of them centrist, have vowed not to accept the AfD's support at the national level.

Europe's most powerful country is expected to vote on February 23 after the fall of the center-left coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

"Only the AfD can save Germany," Musk wrote on his social media platform X.

His post not only caused a stir, but was also followed by a personal message of thanks from German party leader Alice Widel.

Chancellor Scholz also reacted to this issue, explaining that everyone has the right to an opinion, especially in a democracy, implying that Elon Musk's influence is his right, but there are limits to this too.

"But freedom of thought means that you can also say inappropriate things that do not contain good political advice," the German chancellor said at a press conference in Berlin.

Elon Musk, the richest person in the world, has previously expressed support for other anti-immigration parties across Europe.

Musk also reposted a message from German right-wing activist Naomi Seibt criticizing Friedrich Merz, the conservatives' candidate for chancellor, who are leading in the polls.

Matthias Miersch, general secretary of Chancellor Scholz's Social Democrats, told the website 't-online' that Germany did not need foreign influences or "Trumpism".

Musk expressed support for the AfD last year, when it criticized the way the German government handled illegal immigration.

Last month, Musk called for the dismissal of Italian judges who questioned the legality of government measures to prevent irregular immigration.

About a month ago, Musk had openly criticized the Italian judiciary, following the decision that blocked the extradition of illegal immigrants from Rome to the Gjadri camp, built after reaching an agreement with Prime Ministers Meloni and Rama.

Italian judges had even openly criticized Musk for the way he chose to position himself on an Italian national issue. However, Georgia Meloni used Musk's position to her advantage, aiming to be in the inner circle of foreign leaders who will have direct access to Donald Trump's Oval Office after his inauguration on January 20.
