Brian Thompson, chief executive of insurance giant UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning before attending an investor conference, New York police said.

The masked gunman, who is still at large, appeared to be lying in wait and shot Thompson several times in the back, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.

The shooting, which was reported around 6:40 a.m., appeared to be a "targeted one," Tisch said.

Thompson, 50, was in New York City for UnitedHealthcare's investor conference, which was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., and his schedule was widely known, police sources said.

The conference was being held at the Hilton outside of which he was shot, but he wasn't staying there. The hotel is located at the intersection of West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue.

The gunman appeared to know which door Thompson, who was shot multiple times in the doorway on West 54 Street, would enter, police sources said.

"People walked past the perpetrator, but he seemed to be waiting for his target," Tisch said.

After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot and then on an e-bike, and he was last seen in Central Park on Center Drive, Tisch said.

UnitedHealthcare's parent company, UnitedHealth Group, the world's largest health insurer, said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson."
